About World Population Live

A free, ad-supported dashboard for tracking global population in real time.

World Population Live is a free, interactive dashboard that tracks the size of the human population in real time. Our goal is to make demographic data accessible, understandable, and engaging for everyone — students, researchers, journalists, and the simply curious.

We believe that understanding population dynamics matters. Decisions about climate policy, infrastructure, healthcare, and education all depend on knowing how many people there are, where they live, and how those numbers are changing. By presenting this data in a live, visual format, we hope to make it feel real — not just a statistic, but the heartbeat of humanity.

What You Can Do Here

  • Watch the world population counter tick up in real time, along with births and deaths today.
  • Explore any country's population, density, growth rate, and age distribution.
  • Compare two countries head-to-head on population and demographics.
  • Scrub through history from 1950 to projected 2100 with the time slider.
  • Read our articles to understand the stories behind the numbers.

How We Stay Free

This site is supported by advertising. We keep ads limited and unobtrusive so the data stays the focus. We do not charge users, sell data, or run a paid tier. For details on how we handle data, see our Privacy Policy.

Our Data

We do not collect our own population data. We draw on established sources — the United Nations Population Division, the World Bank, and national statistical offices — and present their figures in an interactive format. For a full list of sources and our methods, see our Sources and Methodology pages.

Our Mission

We believe demographic literacy is essential. The decisions that shape our world — how we plan cities, design pension systems, respond to climate change, and allocate resources — all depend on understanding how many people there are, where they live, and how those numbers are changing. Yet population data is often locked behind dense reports or presented as static tables that fail to convey the living, breathing nature of human population. Our mission is to change that: to make the data feel real, current, and personal.

Every second, the world gains roughly 2.6 people. Every minute, a city the size of a small town is born. Every year, the equivalent of Germany's population is added to the planet. By presenting these changes in real time, we hope to make the scale of human growth — and the challenges and opportunities it brings — tangible in a way that no spreadsheet can.

Who Uses This Dashboard

  • Students and educators use it as a teaching tool for geography, social studies, and statistics classes.
  • Journalists and researchers use it to find current population figures and contextualize stories about demographic change.
  • Policy analysts use it to compare countries and understand demographic trends that affect planning.
  • Businesses use it to understand market sizes and growth trajectories in different regions.
  • The simply curious use it to explore the world's population and learn about the forces shaping humanity's future.

Our Commitment to Accuracy

We are transparent about what our numbers can and cannot tell you. Every figure on this site is labeled as one of three types: estimated (based on rates applied to a base population), calculated (derived from other figures using a formula), or projected (forward extrapolations that assume current trends continue). We distinguish these because treating an estimate as a measurement, or a projection as a prediction, leads to false confidence. For a full explanation of how each figure is computed, see our Methodology page.

Open Data and Transparency

We believe in open data. All of our source data comes from public datasets published by international organizations and is freely available to anyone. We do not add proprietary data or charge for access. If you want to use our data in a project, cite the original sources listed on our Sources page. If you have questions about our methods, see our FAQ or contact us directly.
