Top 10 Most Populous Countries in 2026
India, China, and the USA lead the world in population. Discover the rankings, growth trends, and what drives population changes across the top nations.
As of 2026, the world's 10 most populous countries account for over 55% of the global population. India holds the top spot with approximately 1.48 billion people, having surpassed China in 2023. China follows with about 1.41 billion, but its population has begun declining.
The United States ranks third with roughly 349 million, growing slowly at about 0.5% per year. Indonesia (288 million) and Pakistan (259 million) round out the top five, both still growing steadily.
Nigeria (231 million) is the fastest-growing country in the top 10, expanding at over 2.4% annually. It is projected to overtake the United States and become the third most populous country by 2050, with a population exceeding 400 million.
Brazil (217 million), Bangladesh (174 million), Russia (144 million), and Ethiopia (130 million) complete the top 10. Notably, Russia's population has been declining slightly, while Bangladesh has seen a dramatic fertility decline from over 6 children per woman in the 1970s to just 2.0 today.
The shifting rankings tell a larger story: the center of gravity of global population is moving toward Africa and South Asia. By 2100, half of the world's population growth is expected to come from just eight countries: DR Congo, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines, and Tanzania.
